In today’s world, there is an ongoing debate over whether university students should have the freedom to choose their field of study. While allowing the students to select their major can increase motivation and academic performance, opting for subjects related to science and technology can help in career growth. In my view, students should always have autonomy in selecting their field.
On one hand, students who have flexibility in deciding the courses of their choice are more likely to excel academically. This is because they will have personal satisfaction, higher curiosity and passion to study the subject of their interest. A study conducted at FC University, found that the students who selected Biology major independently were more satisfied and had better grades, than the ones who had chosen it under parental or societal pressure. Therefore, providing independence in selecting majors will foster motivation in students.
On the other hand, pursuing the majors that have higher market demand, such as computer science or medicine will provide better opportunities in excelling in the career. This will secure their future and they will have higher paying job. For instance, in the United States, the salary of people working in IT is three times that of the ones doing job at marketing agencies. Hence, ensuring financial stability.
In conclusion, although the popular fields can provide monetary benefits, it may not ensure mental satisfaction. Selecting the preferred study subjects can provide long term advantages. Therefore, universities should encourage students to pursue the majors they like.
