Many individuals think that students in tertiary education should do unpaid work that is beneficial to their local area. I do not agree with this because students need to focus on their studies and some requires income from their paid jobs for their upkeep.
The workload of a university student is considerably high thus time management is essential for achieving a good level grade. Commiting to work for a voluntary organisation can affect the time allocated for studying purposes by the students therefore making them vulnerable to missing assignments deadlines. For example a student volunteering with an organisation for long hours would become tired at the end their shift, tiredness is known to reduce a person’s productivity which is an important component studying for exams and writing coursework.
Students from a disadvantage background needs extra income to support themselves whilst studying at the university. Working for voluntary organisation usually does not come with an income source rather some incentives might be offered. Being from a low income home means students might not have enough or any financial supports to meet their everyday needs. Living away from home, the students do have access to family and financial supports which can leave them destitude if not taken into consideration.
