It is often claimed that zoos must be banned as it is used to capture animals and keep them in captivity. While some people believe that it helps in the preservation of wild animals. This essay agrees with the latter view because I think it helps to preserve the endangered species and conduct research.
First of all, protection and preservation of endangered animals is one of the crucial objectives for which a zoo is constructed. This is because several wild species are at a point of extinction as a result of desertification, deforestation, climate change, poaching and so on. Therefore, these rare animals are collected not only to preserve in the zoo but also to provide them proper medication, hoping for an efficient breeding. For instance, the white bear of China was preserved in a zoo as it was declared endangered by the zoologist. However, the population had boomed after a decade for which the scientists had to declare them vulnerable instead of endangered.
On the other hand, a zoo can be a center of animal research where scientists often have to conduct audit for animals who they are unable to reach in the wild. Additionally, these research on animals help the veterinarians to derivate the genetic algorithms of a animal which is further used for preservation stretegeis. Moreover, the cross-breeding of animals, a critical method of increasing the endangered species, is a pivotal research and can only be performed at a zoo. For example, the veterinarians of USA discovered a vital treatment for endangered amphibious after many years of researching on a Panamanian Golden Frog which was afftected by a fungal infection.
To conclude, although animals remain in captivity in a zoo, I firmly believe that it serves a great purpose by protecting the endangered species and in animal research.
