Band 9: SOME PEOPLE FEEL THAT MANUFACTURER and supermarket have the responsibility to reduce the amount of packaging of goods. Others argue that customers should avoid buying goods with alot of packaging. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In today’s world, the issue of excessive packaging is becoming increasingly problematic, resulting in pollution and unnecessary waste. Some people argue that it is the responsibility of manufacturers and supermarkets to decrease packaging, while others believe that consumers should steer clear of buying products that are over-packaged. I believe that both sides have a vital role to play in reducing waste.

On one side, manufacturers and supermarkets should take initiative in cutting down on packaging waste. One key reason for this is that they are in charge of designing and creating packaging, which gives them direct influence over the amount of materials used. For instance, numerous beverage companies have begun utilizing lightweight, recyclable glass bottles in place of plastic ones to minimize waste. Moreover, supermarkets can set up refill stations for common household items, like detergent and cooking oil, encouraging customers to reuse their containers. Implementing these initiatives would considerably reduce plastic and paper waste, aiding in the protection of the environment.

Conversely, consumers also have an important role in motivating businesses to adopt sustainable packaging practices. The main argument is that if customers reject purchasing items with excessive packaging, companies will be compelled to adjust their practices to satisfy consumer demand. For example, in several countries, shoppers are choosing loose produce instead of pre-packaged options, thereby lessening plastic waste. Consequently, many supermarkets have begun to offer more products without plastic wrapping in order to appeal to environmentally conscious consumers. This illustrates how consumer preferences can influence market changes.

To sum up, both businesses and consumers need to collaborate to address this issue. While companies should concentrate on utilizing sustainable materials and cutting down on unnecessary packaging, consumers should support eco-friendly products and refrain from purchasing items that are overly packaged. Only through a united effort can we effectively diminish packaging waste and safeguard the planet for future generations.
