Advantage And Disadvantage

Band 6+: Some people prefer to live in a house, while others feel that there are more advantages to living in an apartment. Are there more advantages than disadvantages of living in a house compared with living in an apartment?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Presently, some advocate for living in an apartment while others would rather stay in a house. I believe that the benefits of living in a home such as improved space and privacy do not outweigh the negatives such as the higher cost of living alongside a long commute time compared to an apartment.

The major advantages of living in a house are the large space, the average homestead is roughly 3 to 5 times as spacious as a flat. Moreover, modern homes have an outside area and usually a second floor, adding to the effective area. Coincidently, this increase in area also comes with more privacy as it becomes harder for neighbors or outsiders to know what goes on inside.

However, these benefits come at a cost, usually in the form of high prices and inaccessibility to downtown areas. This is because, for the same amount of space, an apartment block can fit many more people due to the compact and efficient space allocation. Thus, landowners charge residences less for a room. For instance, the average accommodation price is 2000$ as opposed to the average dwelling which can go for 50000$.

Additionally, due to the extra space needed, these lodgings have to be built outside of the city. This can be a hindrance to accessibility for the homeowner as they must have access to long-distance transportation such as cars to get anywhere. This is opposed to apartment blocks are located in the middle of the city, making travel much simpler. For instance, most people in Amsterdam don’t own cars as they can always go anywhere on a bike or use public transport. For these reasons, I don’t believe it to be worth living in a house.

In conclusion, although there are advantages to living in a large open space provided by a house, the disadvantages of higher cost and reliance on cars or other long-distance travel.
