There is an ongoing debate about whether libraries play a crucial role in society as a source of information and books. While some argue libraries are nothing but a waste of money and resources, I firmly believe that libraries are pivotal in today’s world due to their atmosphere and the benefits they provide to people.
Proponents of the view advance several compelling arguments. The rise of the internet and the advent of online reading platforms has made access to information significantly easier. There are countless websites that are freely available, allowing people to read and learn at any time and from anywhere, including on public transport or in remote areas where physical libraries are not accessible. This convenience, critics mention, makes libraries increasingly irrelevant in today’s world. Another argument they put forward concerns the high operating cost of libraries. Unlike online platforms, which require minimal maintenance costs, physical libraries have to spend a great amount of money on expenses including, but not limited to, utility bills, staff wages and the purchase of expensive books. For all these reasons, many people go against the view that libraries remain important.
However, as plausible as these arguments may seem, others, including myself, remain convinced that libraries play a significant role in society. For one thing, libraries serve a greater purpose than critics realize and are not just reading places. In today’s digital age, social media is bombarded with notifications from different sites and unwanted messages from social media companies, many people are unable to focus on a demanding task for a prolonged period of time, meaning libraries offer a rare space for deep learning. In light of this, a cozy and distraction free-environment for people to cooperate with others who share the same interests and able to study with full focus. In addition, a worrying concern is raised by the proponents that technology can have a possible impact on human health. Spending a great deal of time looking at digital screens and reading e-books may result in poor eyesight, constant headaches and dizziness, all of which reduce the quality of life.
In conclusion, although I acknowledge the arguments presented by critics, I strongly believe that libraries continue to play a vital role in society.
