Nowadays, it is thought by many people that in order for a city to become a contemporary one, it should have a well-planned public transportation system. While some people feel that there are other significant requirements for the city, I agree with the opinion that an efficient public transportation systems should be more prioritized.
From one point of view, some people believe that instead of focusing on public transport, governments should pay attention to the city’s infrastructure. City infrastructure, such as hospitals and schools directly affects citizens’ lives. Authorities have to ensure that every citizen has access to knowledge and medical services rather than focusing only on public transportation. For instance, New York is a city which has several issues with its public transportation system, but it does not prevent it from having a high level of education and medical facilities. Therefore, having an effective public transport system does not play a crucial role as education and healthcare do.
On the other hand, others believe that a convenient public transportation system is the most important aspect of the modern city because it can make citizens’ lives more comfortable. A well-planned public transportation system might contribute to the reduction of people’s physical efforts, since more bus and metro stations can be introduced. Moreover, a high level of public transport system can lead to reduced traffic congestion because more people will prefer commuting through public transportation. It is well known that Singapore, as one of the most developed countries, has a high level of citizen mobility, because of a well-planned public transportation system. Hence, an efficient public transportation system should be more prioritized.
In conclusion, other requirements of the modern city such as medicine and schools are significant because of its influence. Nevertheless, I support the view that focusing on an effective public transportation system is more important because of the benefits that it brings.
