Band 9: Some people think adults should learn practical skills by themselves, while others believe that learning from a teacher in a classroom is better. Discuss both views and give your opinion

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Practical skills have transformed the way people learn, leading to a debate about whether adults should gain practical proficiencies independently or receive guidance from teachers. Despite teachers can give people immediate feedback, the writer of this essay firmly believes that learning practical abilities on their own bring benefits such as cost-efficiency and convenience.

One argument some people make for the first opinion is that self-learning is more flexible and convenient for adults. It is evident that many people have demanding jobs and family responsibilities, making it difficult for them to attend classes at fixed times. For instance, a full-time office worker may learn basic car maintenance through online videos during weekends rather than joining a weekly training course. As a consequence, adults are able to develop practical skills without interfering with their work schedules or personal obligations.

Another point others make for the second idea is that teachers offer immediate feedback during the learning process. This is because instructors can identify weaknesses and correct mistakes before they become long-term habits. For example, a driving instructor can instantly point out unsafe driving behaviours and show learners how to improve them, which enables them to progress more quickly and achieve a higher level of competence. However, modern technology has reduced adults’ dependence on teachers, as many online platforms can provide instant corrections and personalised suggestions, allowing learners to receive timely feedback without attending formal classes.

Having considered both views, this writer agrees with the former position because self-learning is more cost-effective. It cannot be denied that adults can now access a vast range of free tutorials, educational websites, and instructional videos without paying for expensive courses. To illustrate, someone who wishes to learn cooking can find thousands of free recipes and step-by-step demonstrations online instead of enrolling in a culinary programme. Therefore, practical skill development becomes affordable for a wider range of people, especially those with limited financial resources.

In conclusion, both independent learning and teacher-guided instruction can help adults acquire practical skills effectively. Ultimately, self-learning is the better option because it offers greater convenience and lower costs while still providing access to valuable learning resources and feedback through modern technology.
