It is still in debate whether children should be granted the permission to or should instead be prevented from freely making mistakes. This essay will discuss both opinions.
On one hand, some parents tend to allow their offspring to make mistakes, as errors and mistakes are valuable assets in their own lives. Upon making mistakes, individuals realise their wrongdoings, draw out solutions and take prompt action and responsibility to these problems in order not to recreate the same situation. From these lifelong lessons, children will grow up to be more mature, more experienced in facing adversities in later stages of life. For instance, when making mistakes during the time for homework, after pointing out the errors, children might gain insights and obtain a long-term memorisation of the work. Therefore, parents’ approval for their children’s freedom to make mistakes is also the approval for the formation of self development and sense of responsibility in children’s behavioral patterns and mindsets.
On the other hand, preventative measures of errors and mistakes should also be made by parents to help their children. At an early age, children have the curiosity of the outside world, and this builds up the temptation to experience these phenomenons. As a result of this temptation, undesired and avoidable mistakes might be made in their actions to experience their surroundings, such as burns or cuts from playing with fire or knives in the kitchen. Therefore, early prevention from parents, in the form of warning or through a story, to their offsprings may serve as an enlightenment of hidden dangers behind their reckless actions, and the ground for the acquisition of valuable knowledge to counter hazards in their lives.
In conclusion, allowing children’s freedom to make mistakes is a brilliant approach, as this allows them to come up with solutions, turning into responsible and creative individuals, but prevention of these errors are also of paramount importance due to the severity and undesired harm some mistakes can cause.
