Band 8+: Some people think schools should group pupils according to their academic ability, but others believe pupils with different abilities should be educated together. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Opinions vary as to whether schools should pick students according to their academic profile or have classrooms with students of varying abilities. While I acknowledge that diverse classrooms might offer equal opportunities, in turn leading to equity, I still believe that schools with students of similar abilities provide optimum conditions for students to thrive.

Proponents of diverse classrooms provide several justifications to support their position. They argue that mixed-ability institutions preserve equity, meaning each and every student gets the same quality of education regardless of their background. This matters because selective schools tend to concentrate the best teachers and resources in one place, leaving mixed-ability schools as a way to spread quality education more evenly across society. Alongside this, these types of schools create diverse classrooms where stronger students can help relatively weaker students, forming future leaders with strong interpersonal skills. Young people are preparing for the real world, where they will work alongside people of varying abilities and backgrounds from a young age. They develop soft skills like communication, patience, and adaptability, which their peers in selective schools might lack, since constant exposure to only high-achieving classmates offers fewer chances to practice patience or adapt to different ways of thinking.

Despite these compelling arguments, I remain convinced that student selection based on academic abilities is the superior choice. What makes these types of schools preferable is that they create the best possible conditions for each student to thrive, as every learner has similar academic abilities. As a result, a friendly atmosphere is created, where everyone can understand each other without much conflict. Learners can get peer help and reach similar understanding more easily, as their intelligence doesn’t vary much. Presidential Schools in Uzbekistan are notable examples of this. These government-funded schools have produced many successful graduates who now study at prestigious universities like Harvard, Stanford, and Cornell. They select pupils with high learning profiles through multiple examinations, directly forming a team of top-tier students ready to work with each other. Being surrounded by equally motivated peers pushes students to work harder and aim higher, since they are constantly measuring themselves against classmates of a similar caliber rather than falling behind or being held back by a wider range of abilities. A further factor is that the high-quality education offered by these types of schools helps young people create a better future, as the knowledge gained at this stage might help them get into better universities, where they can acquire professional skills in their field and have better jobs.

Taken together, these factors suggest that the advantages of ability-based schools outweigh the advantages of mixed-ability schools, offering significantly better education and better chances of a successful future.
