Some people believe that secondary school students should study international news as one of their school subjects, while others think it is a waste of valuable school time. While both opinions have valid arguments, I believe schools should focus on core subjects because they are more important for students’ academic and professional success.
On the one hand, studying international news can bring several advantages to students. Not only students can learn about important events around the world, but they also improve their critical thinking and communication skills. Moreover, learning international news allow students to understand politics, economics and environmental issues, that are becoming more significant nowadays. Having learn about these topics, they may become responsible citizens who are able to discuss global problems confidently. This subject also encourages students to respect different cultures and understand how countries cooperate with each other. As a result, they may become more open-minded and better prepared for life in an increasingly connected world.
On the other hand, I believe schools should give greater attention to mathematics, science and languages because these subjects create a strong foundation for higher education and future careers. If schools would spend more class time on international news, students might have less opportunity to master these essential subjects. Furthermore, international news changes rapidly, so students are capable to understand it through television, newspapers and reliable websites outside school. Therefore, making it compulsory should not be consider necessary. Instead, schools could introduce it through optional lessons while keeping the main focus on essential academic subjects.
In conclusion, although international news offers useful knowledge, I believe valuable school time should mainly be devoted to core subjects, while students can follow world events independently outside school.
