Some people suggest that college students should only study subjects related to technology and science. as these subjects -as they argue- are more beneficient for our future. in contrast, others think that students should have the opportunity to choose what to study according to their interests. I fully support the latter suggestion. this essay explains both perspectives and my own point of view.
Those who suggest that University students shouldn’t be allowed to get a degree in fields other than scientific ones. often argue that these are the fields that benefit them in the future and most importantly benefit our word. this is because these subjects control our whole life in many important areas such as healthy studies, chemistry and physics. they shape our lives and enhance communities progress. by providing better services at some of these fields and make advancements in others. not only this, but also providing solutions to rising issues in our planet. for instance, a well-known organization in my country, one that specializes in climate change issue. reported in 2019 that one of the main factors affecting progress to tackle the problem of climate change, is the decrease number of educated individuals about the issue and the decreased workforce in this field. so having more students in such fields can help us put an end to important threatening problems to our world.
In the contrary, others believe that students at college level should follow their interests and choose freely what to study. the reasons for this are firstly, it’s the only way that will make them satisfied in their lives. secondly, other subjects such as music, art and drama are as important as scientific ones. as they are a huge part of our civilization and we should continue to preserve it. and are also beneficial in so many aspects. for example, music studies now include scientific researchers about the nature of sounds and how to produce them. this is an opportunity to improve this area of studies. in addition, music affect our mental health well-being and creativity, which directly affect how we can improve our overall progress in every field. and lastly , -and this is the reason behind my support to this perspective-, is that if students are not really passionate about their area of study, they won’t give their best performance. as humans we tend to be more creative in what we genuinely like and intrinsically motivated to do.
In conclusion, while some think that only scientific fields should be open to college students. due to its importance in finding solutions to world major problems. others believe that they should follow their passion. I agree with the latter idea, because this guarantee they will give their best performance.
