Band 7+: Some people think that in order to prevent illness and disease, governments should make efforts in reducing environmental pollutions and housing problems. To what extent do you agree to disagree with this statement?

Some argue that governments ought to prevent diseases by tackling environmental and housing issues. Personally, I partially agree with this view and I will elaborate on both in the following.

On the one hand, environmental pollution and housing issues can harm people’s physical and mental well-beings. This is because human beings living in a contaminated environment are prone to infections by viruses and toxic chemicals which can lead to severe illnesses. For instance, a decade ago, China suffered from air pollution caused by industrial wastes. As a result, many people developed raspatory diseases directly linked to inhaling polluted air. Also, due to the high real estate property prices in many countries, houses are no longer affordable for youngsters. Consequently, they suffer from depression and have suicidal attempts in this desperate situation.

On the other hand, the cause illnesses has more to do with people’s unhealthy dieting habits. That is to say that people consume unhealthy foods such as French fries, burgers that contain a high level of sugar and cholesterol. In doing so, they damage their body organs since those food ingredients prevent them from functioning properly. A good example of this would be that in America, there is a high percentage of population who have obesity issues and cardiovascular diseases resulting from a long term of unhealthy eating habits. In this case, if governments were to prevent diseases, it would be wise to inform their citizens of their unhealthy diet structures and promote the benefits of healthy diets.

To conclude, although environmental and housing issues can lead to illnesses, they are mainly rooted in people’s unhealthy diets. Therefore, governments should consider introducing policies tackling health issues from this perspective as well.
