Today, people are increasingly using computers and mobile phones for communication, which raises concern about its negative impact on young people’s reading and writing skills. Personally, I think this trend indeed has disadvantageous influences on young people’s ability in reading and writing skills.
The increasing use of electronic devices for communication can hinder young people’s reading skills as the online information conveyed by computers and mobile phones makes them get more used to fragmented reading. When young people chat with their friends via cell phone, they get used to sending emojis and phrases to quickly express their feelings. In this process, they are seldom exposure exposed to long sentences or even passages, and therefore, their ability of to reading in depth gradually degrades.
The writing skills of the Z-generation also suffer. As what had mentioned above, the youth has already been accustomed to writing short sentences to convey their ideas, and the quick communication in on computers and phones also makes them prefer continuous jump from one topic to another one than deeper exploration in of one specific issue, which impedes their ability to write a complete and meaningful sentence, not to say a research paper which needs in-depth analysis and logical thinking.
In conclusion, the quick way of communication through computers and cell phones, including short sentences and swift shift among discussing topics, causes degradation of young people’s reading and writing skills.
