As it is well known, nowadays society is majoritarily based in technology, which of course includes artificial intelligence (ai). Thanks to professional translators combined with the use of this information technologies, people can understand every language by just taking a picture with google lens. So were we to follow this idea, there would no longer exist the need of learning to speak foreign languages. Disagreeing with this statement, several opinions and arguments will be discussed in this essay.
I have always been keen on learning languages, which I find extremely interesting and important. In my personal experience, studying different languages not only helps you communicate with others, but also dive into their culture, sometimes even into yours. If you show yourself to be proactive when learning, this will enrich your vocabulary and communication skills, in addition to being more open-minded.
Due to the fact of having to communicate with others, I find it especially important when traveling. Natives, at least most of them, will make an effort to understand what you are trying to say. It’s not about being the best but about being able to communicate your ideas as well as your needs and not depend on some phone that can run out of battery any time soon. Of course you can aid yourself with it, but I feel that new generations are totally dependent on ai, which at some point becomes anti productive.
At last, I studied in a bilingual highschool. These programs have disappeared and now, except for the English subject, everything is taught in Spanish. They implemented this change, shielding themselves beyond the idea of people not acquiring all the knowledge they were able to. I can tell first hand I’ve learnt a lot at school, as well as absolutely assure the program was effective. Neurological studies back up that when you are younger knowledge is retained in a better way. So in conclusion, I think children should be encouraged to learn as many languages as they can.
