There has been a considerable debate over whether goverments should invest money in promoting the usage of bicycles in urban areas or improving public transport systems. Although spending money on public transport offers certain benefits one of them is reducing traffic congestion, I believe that encouraging people to use bicycles would bring higher advantages for both resedents and environment.
On the one hand, investing in public transportation can offer several subsidies. If goverment improves buses, trains and underground systems, more people may prefer traveling publicly instead of using private cars. As a result, the number of traffic jams could be declined. In addition public transport is useful for everyone including elderly people those who travel long distances. Moreover, resedents could travel around the cities more conveniently and affordably.
On the other hand, promoting the use of bicycles also brings significant benefits, and in my opinion, these outweigh the advantages of public transport. Firstly, bicycles do not pollute any harmful emissions, so increasing the number of cyclists can make cities cleaner and reduce air pollution, which is a serious problem in many urban areas. Secondly, cycling is a form of exercise, so people who cycle regularly to work or school tend to be healthier and less likely to suffer from illnesses which caused by inactive lifestyle. Furthermore, building cycling lanes and public bicycle-sharing schemes are more cheaper rather than developing new bus or underground systems, making its more effective solution for goverments.
In conclusion, while public transport clearly has its own advantages, such as carrying more passangers and helping elderly or disabled people travel. I believe that promoting the use of bicycles is a better investment for cities.
