Nowadays, some people believe that public libraries should become digital centres and reduce the number of printed books, while others argue that traditional libraries are important for preserving cultural heritage and providing spaces for local communities. In this essay,I will discuss both views and give my own opinion on why libraries should combine modern technology with traditional resources.
On the one hand, transforming libraries into digital hubs has several advantages. Firstly, digital resources allow people to access a huge amount of information quickly and conveniently. Instead of searching through many books, users can find the information they need online within seconds. Moreover, digital books and online databases can be updated more easily than printed materials, which helps readers access the latest information. This approach may also save physical space and reduce the costs of storing and maintaining large collections of books. As a result, libraries could use this space to provide computers, internet access and educational activities.
On the other hand, traditional libraries continue to play an important role in society. Printed books can offer a more comfortable reading experience for people who prefer physical materials, and some historical documents are valuable parts of a country’s cultural heritage. If libraries remove too many printed books, important sources of knowledge may become less accessible to future generations.Furthermore, libraries are not only places for reading but also community spaces where people can study, meet others and participate in educational events. This is particularly important for those who do not have a quiet place to study at home.
In my opinion, public libraries should modernise their services without completely replacing printed books with digital resources. Although technology makes information easier to access, traditional books and community spaces remain valuable. Libraries should therefore invest in digital facilities while preserving important printed collections and providing comfortable areas for reading and studying.
In conclusion, digital libraries offer convenience and access to modern information, whereas traditional libraries protect cultural heritage and support local communities. I believe that combining both approaches is the most effective way to meet people’s needs in the future.
