Nowadays, most people feel that free public transportation would be better, mostly in conurbations; however, it could negatively affect the government budget. I believe that other qualities, such as boosting citizens’ quality of life by avoiding wasted money, would be available among citizens.
Weaknesses of the view that free public transportation may result in a crisis in the government budget include the difficulty in paying drivers’ salaries. In large cities, there are many transportations and thousands of passengers; for instance, if transport fees were unrestricted for everyone, income from users would reach zero. As a result, it is obvious that most income comes from large cities. So, if fares were free, it would lead to new problems in the government’s budget.
On the other hand, free fares may create greater availability among community members. There are certain sections of society that cannot use public transport daily because they cannot afford it. For example, families with numerous children struggle to cover children’s fares when the family does not have a dual income. To put it simply, lower-salaried individuals could use transportation if these payments were eliminated.
Eliminating transportation costs can improve people’s lives, allowing them to save money. For example, every citizen regularly spends a certain amount of their income each month to travel. It would be better to invest this money in healthcare. As a result, free public transport could boost society’s well-being.
In conclusion, while there may be some crisis after eliminating public transportation fares, I believe it would provide individuals with a fuller life, allowing everyone to use public transport and spend money on other responsibilities, such as healthcare.
