A group of individuals thinks that stores should be prohibited from selling food or drinks that have scientifically been proven to have negative effects on people’s health. This essay disagrees with this opinion because it will cause people to lose jobs and reduce the diversity in cuisine.
A lot of companies have junk food as their primary source of income. While these items might have a bad impact on the consumer’s health, the guilty pleasure that comes from eating them makes them a solid product on the market. This source of income allows companies to hire people and supply them with financially stable lives. For example, the company which makes Oreos employs hundreds to thousands of people around the world. If Oreo were banned because of the harmful sugar content, these people would lose their jobs and hurt the local economy.
A considerable number of dishes actually have a negative impact on the consumer’s health. Throughout history, some cultures have lived in poverty and so they created cuisine options that helped them survive through the period. Nowadays, even if they are no longer limited, they have acquired the taste and incorporated those dishes into their culture. For instance, the Nordic people once consumed extremely fermented fish because that’s the only food they have left and they can’t afford to starve. If shops stopped supplying these food options, younger people might not know of them and forget the harsh history associated with the dishes.
In conclusion, shops ought to be allowed to sell food or beverages even if they have a bad impact on the consumer’s health. This is if they are banned, a lot of job opportunities will be taken away and cuisine options will be lost.
