Band 6+: Some people think that shops should not be allowed to sell any food or drink that has scientifically been proven to have bad effects on people's health. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

A significant number of people argue that unhealthy food and drink should be banned due to the harmful effect they impact on people’s health. Despite its numerous detriments, I strongly believe that it should be implemented due to various benefits involved in such a plan.

On one hand, prohibiting unhealthy food can lead to various disadvantages. Firstly, it exacerbates unemployment because fast food industry companies are major employers. By doing this, it will lead to widespread job loss, affecting their livelihoods and public welfare systems. Furthermore, this policy can be challenging and time-consuming owing to huge requests on financial resources and diligence of governments to experiment, establish regulations, and manage potential crises. For instance, if McDonalds’ closes, governments have to find a solution to tackle not only finance but also pollution, construction, and employers’ insurance. Therefore, banning processed food can bring lots of drawbacks to both individuals and society.

On the other hand, it is firmly opined that banning food and drink that are scientifically proven to be harmful can bring lots of advantages. First of all, this policy prevents processed food from being manufactured all over the markets, emphasising the danger of those products, leading to healthier and safer choices of food for customers. Therefore, individuals can cultivate their healthier eating habits and alleviate diet-related health issues. Moreover, it is crucial to enhance social awareness campaigns about nutrition and health-conscious lifestyles. For example, both parents and school should educate children in knowing the detrimental effect that fast food causes on people’s health as well as selecting which food is healthier and more nutritious. This can result in preventing people from having poor diets, encouraging them to eat healthily, and contributing to a better and healthier society.

In conclusion, I strongly agree that fast food businesses should be banned to prevent pollution and diseases that are the main causes of people’s health. By doing this, not only individuals feel more positive and optimistic but also make the society healthier.
