Many believe that social media is influencing society in a negative way. I completely agree with this claim due to some reasons that are explained below.
The first reason why I totally support this idea is that social media can distort people’s perception of reality. Internet users are often exposed to online posts, images, or news that they accept uncritically. However, what they fail to acknowledge is that such information can be curated or sensationalised by some profit-driven media outlets or materialistic celebrities. These are influencers whose priorities lie in publicity and revenues rather than accuracy. For example, by portraying lifestyles that seem ideal yet unattainable, several public figures may make their viewers think that a ‘perfect life’ involves what their idols possess. This makes it easy for such celebrities to sign contracts and increase their incomes while leaving their followers struggling with unrealistic expectations and a distorted self-image.
Another reason why I wholeheartedly agree with the notion is that media platforms can serve as an enabler of online crime. Admittedly, one may argue that social networking platforms have facilitated communication by providing their users with efficient means to communicate, such as text messages, voicemails, or video calls, allowing them to connect with almost anyone at the click of a button. However, this perspective overlooks how this convenience can contribute to cybercrime. Specifically, fraudsters can now go anonymous on social websites and conceal their identity under the guise of a trustworthy individual. This helps them to expand their range of targeted victims, making pressing scams or phishing, even more rampant.
In conclusion, I strongly endorse the view that social media is having a detrimental impact on society, since it can create a distorted view of reality and enable cybercrime.
