Band 8+: Some people think that technology development decreases crime, while others believe it actually encourages crimes. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

The debate about whether technology reduces or increases crime is complex, and both sides have good points.

Technology Reduces Crime: Supporters of this idea believe that new technologies help reduce crime by improving the tools that police and security systems use. For example, CCTV cameras, facial recognition, and AI can help prevent crime, monitor dangerous areas, and catch criminals faster. Many criminals are discouraged from committing crimes because they know they might be caught through these advanced systems. In addition, technologies like strong cybersecurity can protect personal data and financial transactions from being stolen or misused.

Technology Encourages Crime: However, others argue that technology creates new ways for criminals to commit crimes. Cybercrime, for example, has increased with the growth of the internet. Hackers, identity thieves, and fraudsters use technology to find victims or steal sensitive information. The dark web allows people to buy illegal goods like drugs or weapons. Criminals also become more sophisticated as technology develops, making it harder for police to stop them. The anonymity of the internet often makes people feel safe to commit crimes they wouldn’t do in real life.

My Opinion: Although technology can be used to commit crimes, I believe it is more helpful in reducing them. With better tools, law enforcement can predict, prevent, and investigate crimes more effectively. At the same time, society can create stronger laws and improve cybersecurity to fight against technology-related crimes. In conclusion, even though technology presents challenges, its ability to reduce crime is more significant when used correctly.
