Nowadays, it is becoming increasingly popular for producers to use famous athletes to advertise their sports products. This phenomenon has generated an ongoing debate about the benefits of this type of publicity. Some individuals argue that it is more advantageous than disadvantageous. I agree with this viewpoint, and in this essay, I will support my opinion with examples.
Firstly, using celebrities for advertisement can increase the visibility of the products. Most famous players are viewed on social media by millions of supporters around the world, so using them may raise awareness of a new product in just a blink. Take, for instance, Cristiano Ronaldo. He is the world’s most followed athlete, and because of this, many sports companies contact him for publicity. Each time he shares his content, more than 50 million viewers see it in just one day.
Another reason why I agree with this is that it has the tendency to increase the number of items sold. Many sports supporters have at least one idol, whom they would like to resemble, so using a player with many fans can increase the number of sports wear purchases. A perfect example of this is the arrival of Messi to PSG. There were more than 500,000 T-shirts sold that day, because the club used Messi, who is very famous, to advertise the shirts.
On the other hand, it is argued that this may increase the number of fake sports products in the market, because their demand may become higher than the supply, giving fraudsters the opportunity to create fake kits.
To sum up, using famous sports stars to advertise sports products has more benefits than drawbacks. Personally, I believe that this kind of publicity can increase sales and awareness in just a click, and that is what business is all about.
