The world population is increasing rapidly. Increasing food demand is one of the major challenges associated with population growth. Some people believe that edible insects are good solution for such problem. However, other believe they are not suitable because of health problems asscociated with them. I believe insects could potential help to solve the problem of world hunger.
Most food sources require substantial amount of time to grow. The insects are one of the fastest and easiest sources of food. They can grow quickly. Within the span of few weeks, their population increase from hundreds to thousands. For instance lucas can increase its population from just dozen to thousands in 2 to 3 weeks.
Furthermore, insect farming is relatively low-investment business with low running cost. Insects can eat food waste from nearby fruit and vegetables markets. Similarly, they can be fed leftover food, which is not only cost effective but also environment friendly. Building shelter to grow insects is also relatively cheap and also requires less initial investment as compare to many conventional food sources such as agriculture and cattle.
However, insects harvesting poses some challenges as well. Some people don’t like eating insects due to either psychological factors or health concerns. Similarly, vegetarians do not like to consume insects as well. Another major challenge is to monitor what insects consume during farming process. If insects eat something poisinous or dangerous then it will be harmful to the person consuming them as well. Insects can be home to many bacteria and viruses harmful for human being. This might can lead to serious health problems.
In conclusion, insects can offer great solution in order to tackle growing food demands as population grows. However, much care will be required in order to make them consumable for humans to avoid health complications.
