Band 9: Some people think that zoos are cruel and should be closed down. Others, however, believe that zoos can be useful in protecting wild animals. Discuss both opinions and give your own opinion.

The question of whether zoos are cruel institutions which compromise the welfare and dignity of sentient creatures or safe havens which safeguard endangered fauna has become a subject of polarized debate, leading to further questions as to whether they should, in turn, be closed or not. From my perspective, entertainment-focused institutions that do not adhere to moral principles should be decommissioned, while modern conservation-driven institutions should be promoted.

Opponents of zoos raise valid ethical concerns regarding the psychological and physiological toll of captivity on wild animals. Confining those naturally wide-ranging species to enclosures leads to psychological distress and severe behavioural abnormalities, some of which being repetitive pacing and self-harm. Critics also argue that the primary objective of commercial zoos is financial gain through human entertainment, rather than genuine animal welfare. From this perspective, stripping wild animals of their autonomy for human amusement is ethically unsound and morally objectionable.

Advocates, conversely, emphasize the vital ecological contributions made by modern zoological institutions, particularly concerning the preservation of biodiversity. Many zoos operate highly sophisticated, international captive breeding programs designed to prevent the imminent extinction of critically endangered species. For instance, populations of creatures decimated by poaching or habitat destruction in the wild have been successfully stabilized and re-introduced to their natural habitats thanks to zoo-funded initiatives. Additionally, zoos serve as accessible educational hubs, fostering public empathy and raising substantial capital required to fund global field conservation efforts that would otherwise languish.

In my opinion, the debate should not center on a binary choice between total closure or uncritical acceptance, but rather on a fundamental transformation of what a zoo represents. Commercial institutions that prioritize spectator-driven amusement over animal welfare are obsolete and should indeed be decommissioned. However, transitioning these facilities into highly regulated, ethically sound conservation sanctuaries is vital. These modern sanctuaries provide expansive, simulated natural habitats where scientific research and genetic preservation take precedence over public exhibition, striking a necessary compromise between ethical animal treatment and the urgent reality of global extinction.

In conclusion, while the visible distress of caged animals provides a compelling argument for those demanding the closure of zoos, the critical lifeline these institutions extend to endangered species cannot be overlooked. Ultimately, I believe that the future lies in the eradication of exploitative entertainment facilities and the systematic evolution of zoos into sanctuaries dedicated purely to ecological preservation and animal welfare.
