It is argued that the most essential aspect of life is work, as a successful career defines a meaningful life. Although professional success may help individuals foster a sense of meaning and achievement, I partly disagree with this viewpoint as it may lead to a more stressful life.
On the one hand, it is understandable why some people contend that a successful career path shapes a meaningful life as it helps individuals earn respect and admiration. To be more specific, with the rapid global development, the job market is becoming increasingly competitive in professional areas such as medicine, education. Such a change can raise levels of difficulty in professional careers, resulting in a prevalent thinking that work accomplishments are far from achievable. As a result, people who excel in their professions may be considered to be role models for younger generations to respect and follow, therefore fostering a sense of achievement.
On the other hand, I believe that if society refines a meaningful life based on careers success, it may result in highly stressful lifestyle. In other words, if individuals continuously pursue professional achievements, they may lack time for other vital areas in life. Especially the professional work standards have increased significantly, which requires workers to spend more time focusing on their jobs. As a result, individuals may become overwhelmed by heavy workloads, which can gradually undermine their mental and physical well-being in the long run. Consequently, if workers are not successful in their professional fields, they may lose ambitions and confidence which may negatively affect their later future. In addition, if a meaningful life is meant to be happy, personal passion can also provide fulfilments because pursuing passion also gives a sense of achievement and a lifelong pride.
In conclusion, while successful career may gain social recognition and admiration, I believe that an excessive focus on work may lead to a stressful life with deterioration of health. Therefore, a meaningful life should not only rely on career success but also on other factors such as pursuing one’s passion.
