In today’s technological era, social media platforms have become ubiquitous, particularly among adolescents, who utilize these channels to connect with individuals across the globe and rapidly access news updates from any location. While it is acknowledged that there are significant drawbacks associated with the use of social media, I contend that the disadvantages outweigh the benefits.
Historically, communication relied heavily on handwritten correspondence, which proved to be both inconvenient and costly, as ink and paper were rare commodities accessible primarily to affluent families. Moreover, gaining insights into global events necessitated financial investment in newspapers or specialized information services. In stark contrast, the advent of advanced technology, particularly in the form of electronic news outlets and social media applications, has transformed information accessibility. Individuals today can effortlessly seek out information on a plethora of subjects, including international developments. Furthermore, they have the ability to stay in touch with family and friends through calls, texts, or voice messages, effectively bridging geographical gaps. For instance, the Vietnamese messaging application Zalo has gained immense popularity, allowing users to easily communicate with others as long as they possess an electronic device.
Conversely, the rapid proliferation of social media presents several significant risks. Users may inadvertently encounter violent or harmful content. In recent years, platforms such as TikTok have seen a rise in the dissemination of low-quality and toxic videos, contributing to negative impacts on viewers’ mental well-being. Exposure to such harmful material can provoke anxiety and distress among users. Additionally, there are perilous implications associated with the oversharing of personal information on these platforms, as individuals often reveal sensitive details, including bank accounts, home addresses, and employment information. This oversharing facilitates identity theft and fraud, with cybercriminals utilizing stolen data to exploit their victims. For example, there has been a marked increase in online fraud cases in Vietnam, resulting in significant financial losses for numerous individuals.
In conclusion, while social media platforms offer a myriad of functions that enhance user convenience, the associated risks and harmful consequences appear to overshadow these advantages. Therefore, it is imperative for users to remain vigilant regarding their online presence and the potential repercussions of engaging with these platforms.
