Band 6+: Some people want governments to spend money looking for life on other planets. Others, however, think this is a waste of public money when there are so many problems on earth. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

The topic of whether governments should invest money in discovering the unexplored parts of the universe is of great interest. While it is understandable why the authorities feel the need to explore life activities in space, I believe that these kinds of fundings can be used to tackle other urgent issues.

There are multiple reasons why certain groups of people believe that it is essential that governments arrange spatial expeditions. The main benefit of putting in money for astrological development is that researchers can stumble upon invaluable matters somewhere in the cosmos considering that humanity has yet to tap into most planets containing unlimited resources. In doing so, it can contribute to relieving the pressure’s on Earth’s finite resources. This is exemplified by the fact that scientists have already discovered rare elements, which are useful in the current industrial revolution, on Mars. This could result in a stable market since the chances of a crisis in resources would be lower.

In spite of those arguments, I support the view that investing in exploring the universe is a waste of citizen’s tax money. Instead, by spending the government’s fund on dealing with existing problems within their own country, the inhabitants’ life quality can be improved. Currently, many pressing issues such as poverty, climate change and clean water scarcity have led to the deteriorated living conditions in many areas. With lower spending in spatial programs, which more often than not take up billions of dollars, and focusing on social welfare, poverty rates would decrease and slow down the glass house effect. One possible consequence of greater investment in enhancing people’s satisfaction is that we can create a positive environment for our people to grow, leading up to a thriving economy where no one is left behind.

In conclusion, it seems to me that it would be better, in the meantime, for world’s leaders to ensure equal living conditions for their citizens by investing money into solving environment, healthcare and education problems.
