Tourism plays an invaluable role in contributing to the global economy. Some proponents believe that international tourism generates stress and tension rather than understanding between individuals of different cultures. I strongly disagree with the above statement. In the following paragraphs, I will explain why tourism fosters cultural understanding despite the challenges.
On the one hand, tourism plays a vital role in understanding different cultures and traditions. Many people visit other countries and are provided an opportunity to experience the local culture and traditions. Consequently, the locals also get to know about foreign cultures in exchange for sharing their heritage. For instance, the cherry blossom festival in Japan is held once a year, and people around the world come to experience this beautiful phenomenon. As a result, the locals and tourists exchange knowledge about cultures and traditions. Moreover, some student exchange programs can also help individuals to experience different cultures and traditions while sharing knowledge of the cultures and traditions followed in their countries.
On the other hand, tourism also builds a lot of stress on the locals stemming from cultural misunderstandings, environmental strains, and overcrowding. Venice is a prime example, with rising numbers of tourists each year leading to degradation of the environment, and this overcrowding also results in strain on the resources. Additionally, instances of people dressing inappropriately in sacred places result in people believing that the tourists do not respect their culture and traditions, leading to frustration and resentment.
In conclusion, although there are valid concerns about the stress placed on the locals, the potential for understanding different cultures and traditions is substantial.
