Advantage And Disadvantage

Band 7+: Some students prefer to take a gap year between high school and university, to work or to travel. Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

So important is the idea of a gap year between school and university for young people that they can gain several positive impacts. I would argue that the advantages of this notion outweigh its disadvantages to some extent.

Regarding the benefits, taking a gap year can provide young people with valuable opportunities for their personal growth. It is widely believed that students can develop essential life skills such as time management and interpersonal skills, which are rarely acquired through formal education alone. It seems that these practical skills lead to more tremendous career success later in life, thereby outweighing the potential drawbacks. Furthermore, many young people spend their gap year to achieve something significant, whether in voluntary work or in a sector of business that broadens their perspectives and strengthens their practical abilities.

However, we should not ignore the various drawbacks that a gap year may bring about. Firstly, the majority of students are unable to earn an independent income, which makes it difficult for them to cover various expenditures such as airfares, accommodation, and living costs. Consequently, they must rely solely on parental allowances or borrow money from others. Secondly, it would seem that a gap year takes a young person’s focus away from studying and allows them to get involved in distractions such as traveling. This can make it hard to adjust to university life, damaging the student’s performance. Ultimately, one major concern when young people live independently is that they might become the victims of crime. In many cases, incidents such as robberies, kidnappings, and even scams are highly prevalent, particularly in metropolitan centers.

To conclude, while taking a year off can bring drawbacks to some extent, I would argue that it can instead be a valuable activity, with the experience leading to the improvement of young persons’ skills. Surely, this is valid as long as such an approach is carefully planned and devoted to activities that provide genuine value.
