Advantage And Disadvantage

Band 6+: Some students prefer to take a gap year between high school and university, to work or to travel. Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

To many students who just graduated from high school, taking a gap year before applying for a university brings as many advantages as disadvantages. While taking a break off of studying can reduce a significant amount of time, I think that the benefits outweigh the drawbacks, as this trend gives students opportunities to find their personal interests and talents.

It is reasonable to think that taking a gap year between high school and college slows down the progress of future career planning. Due to growing competition of job employments, it is notably more difficult for postgraduates to find suitable jobs for their specific fields of study. In college, students tend to have limited major choices, this trend inevitably puts so much pressure on freshman students. As a result, many students chose to drop out of universities to rethink about their goals, they’d likely lose years of valuable time on planning and making decisions. However, I believe that the gap time simultaneously provides students some chances to take a survey on themselves.

On the other hand, taking a gap year grants students a great opportunities to search for their true interests or earn extra money to pay for the tuitions by working part-time jobs. There is so many students who don’t have clear achievements, as much as ones who lack the resources to commit in studying in college. One study indicates that more students in recent years have chose to take a gap year, and it proves that many have applied for universities with higher confidence and fund.

To conclude, I believe that the benefits of taking a gap year outweigh the drawbacks. It is not always inevitable that students will fail on their career for giving themselves some time before becoming college students, but it rather gives them some opportunities to make plans for the next big step.
