Band 7+: Some think most crime is the result of circumstances e.g. poverty and other social problems. Others believe that most crime is caused by people who are bad by nature. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

It is believed that the high rate of crimes is caused by social problems, while it is also argued that the reason for people to commit crimes is merely their bad nature. Personally, I believe that committing crimes has more to do with circumstances in the world, earlier as well as now; hence, I am inclined to support the former claim.

To start off, some individuals are of the opinion that many people are able to perpetrate crimes due to their life conditions and problems, such as poverty, unemployment and the like. As for me, such beliefs make so much sense, so I cannot but agree with these claims. Reportedly, the tendency of engagements in criminal activities is by far very high in the fairly poor states or countries. The higher the number of poor people on the streets the higher the number of arrested people, participating in crimes. And the reason for that, as it is believed by many, is that stress, caused by difficult circumstances, provokes people to do immoral actions which are barely the attempts to put the ends together and not to die. According to certain beliefs, people are unlikely to steal, murder or violate statutes under good circumstances and with sound mind.

Nevertheless, others opine that crimes are usually committed by bad people, claiming that they were born that way and they have a natural inclination to rebellious and malicious behaviour. There are a certain percentage of people in the world who do have some psychological problems and disorders, such as, for instance, psychopaths, and supposedly their mental conditions resulted in inadequate actions, such as murders or torturing of living creatures. Those types of people, unfortunately, are not able to feel empathy or compassion towards others; therefore, they may accidentally or intentionally indulge in crimes. In the other words, a significant number of crimes were really conducted by people who are bad in nature, although this number is not that great, still many tend to believe that this is the actual reason for criminal activities.

To sum up, there is undeniably some truth in each statement, a myriad of crimes were enacted by people in terrible circumstances, as well as a particular amount of crimes were executed by naturally evil individuals. Yet, my position remains the same. I believe that certain life conditions may result in undesirable actions, but the majority of people are still kind and loving deep down in their souls.
