Many young adults are migrating from rural to urban areas thereby leaving in their parents and guardians to see themselves through daily tasks. I am of the opion that this is primarily a negative development while it allows young people to seek better financial opportunities it leaves the elderly socially isolated and a collapse in the rural economy.
Firstly, when mature individuals migrate from the regional areas to the metrocities, they leave behind old men and women to fend for themselves. Most work that is done in the rural areas involves manual labour. This can be particulary difficult for them as their bodies have become frail and the work requires a strong healthy young person. Older peole are left without any family closeby to assist them with daily chores, in emegerncies and providing basic companionship. For instance an elderly couple that was blessed with children, all their children move from the rural area once they reach the legal age of 18 to search for employment
Lastly, with a decline in the most productive population in the countryside there is a significant drop in the rural economy. As many young people move to the city fewere young families remain in the farms. This means local shops schools and healthcare facilities are eventually forced to close down, leaving children or elders who are left behind to travel long distances to school and hospitals everyday. An example of a seven year old grandchild in Mbembesi who walks twenty kilometres to and from school everyday.
In conclusion, the significant rise in the number of young people moving from the rural areas to towns and cities has resulted in the elderly to be isolated and led to a economic downturn in the countryside
