Children today tend to gravitate towards passive activities like watching television, rather than engaging in active pursuits. This essay aims to explore the reasons behind this trend and propose several solutions to encourage them to participate more in sports or games.
Several factors contribute to the increasing amount of time children spend watching TV. The widespread availability and accessibility of television and digital media have greatly expanded entertainment options, leading youngsters to develop addictions to TV and lose interest in innovative, creative, and physical activities. For example, my nephews, aged around 6 and 8, prefer watching TV over pursuing traditional hobbies or playing outdoors. Additionally, the lack of adequate playgrounds and parks deprives children of outdoor activities, as seen in recent housing developments in Tashkent where parks are being reduced, pushing children to spend more time indoors watching TV.
Another contributing factor is the diminishing sense of community and connection among neighbors and relatives in today’s fast-paced world. With everyone focused on their daily responsibilities and the challenges of finding employment, there is limited time for social interactions. This lack of communal support also impacts children’s social development negatively.
In conclusion, children’s excessive TV watching is a result of the easy access to numerous channels and the absence of parental guidance and encouragement to engage in constructive activities. To address this issue, parents need to motivate, guide, and actively participate with their children in activities that promote physical and mental well-being, rather than passively watching TV.
