It is widely acknowledged that crime is always a serious issue that perennially exists in society. Some individuals hold the notion that education is the optimal method of curbing the crime rates. While it may work to a certain extent, I believe that educating after imprisonment is not a holistic approach to the issue of crime.
The advocacy for education is largely justifiable. The main reason for this view is that after acquiring knowledge in prison, inmates could also have incarceration time for practicing extra skills in apprenticeship such as carpenter, builder which is an alternative way for them to make a living when reintegration. Moreover, being educated provides them an emotion of regret while reflecting on the ex-criminal acts had been done in the past which acts as a precursor to their successful rehabilitation. However, only education will be inefficient from poverty, social oppression convicts which drives them to confinement. In fact, after release, they would re-offence even after being educated just because of having any choices. In addition, it also may prove prohibitively costly.
Instead of education in prison, governments should emphasize on educating teenagers, especially secondary institutions. It is the most sensitive period as the young is susceptible to harmful influences, so that teacher and parents play a vital role in shaping their thinking to be law-abiding from the reality unlawful situations such as showing them about addicted criminals and the results of being crystal meth that the addict will do to get money for satisfied heroines. Furthermore, governments should subsidize thoughtfully and humanity for those who are extremely rehabilitated and their needy families to incentivize them to be exemplary citizens.
In conclusion, education in prison does not bring about the desired effects and this issue is better dealt with early education for teenagers.
