Research has shown that many teenagers choose to socialize on the internet instead of in real life. This essay will explain why many of them make this decision and then propose some solutions to help tackle this problematic tendency.
The primary reason for teenagers’ preference to communicate online is that it takes less effort compared to face-to-face interaction. Let’s assume there are two types of people: those you know and strangers. Social media makes it easy for teenagers to interact with both types. They can easily chat with their friends anywhere, anytime, on online platforms, which is obviously more convenient than talking to them face-to-face. Making new friends in real life requires confidence to start a conversation with strangers. On social media, however, teenagers can find more topics to talk about and feel less fear of being judged, making it easier for them to strike up conversations with new people.
To encourage teenagers to socialize face-to-face more, they must recognize the benefits of in-person communication. Schools must take responsibility for this awareness by organizing more activities that encourage young students to interact with their peers and make friends. For example, they can create clubs that bring students with similar hobbies together. This not only helps them engage in meaningful activities but also provides an experience that online interaction cannot replicate.
The tendency of teenagers choosing to socialize online over making friends in real life is understandable. However, it is important to encourage more in-person interaction at this age.
