Band 8+: Task 2 Films and computer games containing violence are popular. Some people say they have negative effects on society and should be banned. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

In the modern era, films and computer games that contain violent content have become increasingly popular. While some people argue that such forms of entertainment negatively affect society and should therefore be banned, others believe they are simply a source of enjoyment. In my opinion, although violent films and games can be engaging, their harmful influence on behaviour, especially among young people, outweighs their benefits.

On the one hand, watching films or playing computer games involving violence can be entertaining and provide excitement, particularly for young people. These forms of media can capture attention easily and offer a way to relax after stressful routines. However, exposure to violent content may have negative consequences. Teenagers may imitate the behaviour of characters they admire and unconsciously adopt aggressive traits, which can lead to harmful actions in real life. For instance, “The boy’s word:Blood on the Asphalt”, a popular Russian television series among Asian teenagers, depicts young boys committing crimes such as robbery and vandalism. Such content may normalize illegal behaviour and influence viewers to imitate it. Furthermore, prolonged engagement with violent media can reduce empathy and social skills, as individuals spend more time in virtual conflicts than in real-life interactions.

On the other hand, banning or strictly regulating violent films and computer games could bring several benefits. Government restrictions can reduce exposure to aggressive content and encourage safer behaviour among young people. If teenagers spend less time on violent entertainment, they may focus on education, sports, or creative hobbies, which can help develop a more responsible mindset. For example, schools and community centres that offer alternative recreational activities, such as sports or art clubs, often see improvements in students’ behaviour and social skills. Additionally, stricter regulation may motivate media producers to create content that is more positive or educational, which can further contribute to the well-being of society.

In conclusion, although violent films and computer games can be enjoyable, their negative effects on society cannot be ignored. While a complete ban may be unrealistic, stricter regulation and parental supervision are necessary to minimize their harmful impact and promote a safer and more responsible society.
