The question of whether individuals public their personal information on online platform is a positive or negative trend has been a subject of intense academic and social debate. While I acknowledge that public individuals information on social media has certain merits, it is my firm conviction that these are eclipsed by the far-reaching disavantages, as will be discussed in this essay.
There are several compelling reasons why some individuals advocate for putting their personal information online. Chief among these is it makes signing up for accounts much more convenient for users. This phenomenon is often rooted in the fact that users are no longer to going to a original platform to login account or register for a personal account. In a broader sense, this leads to individuals can save time when doing these registration. The prime illustration of this can be seen in, in the past, to open up a stock account, people would have to go to a stock company and complete lots of paperwork. Furthermore public personal information on digital platform is also valued for its ability to makes signing in to these accounts easier for users. This means that instead of choosing security question or remembering password, account like in the past, nowadays, users only need to provide their phone number or email address to get verified. Thus it is understandable why this perspective remains prevalent, although I belive its significance is limited compared to the disavantages.
On the other hand, I maintain that providing personal information online are lead to multiple problems. Primarily, the user will become a target for not just material but also identity thefts. Unlike other minor factor, this approach ensures that once the thief acquires the the person’s address, they can easily breal into that person’s house, especially with other information already posted on social media, like vacation plans. This, in turn, paves the way for thief can impersonate the user to claim insurance or selling one’s information on online website to earn money. This is the best exemplied by once hackers obtain details such as phone numbers or email addresses, they may gain access to social media or bank accounts, resulting in financial losses and privacy breaches. Additionally, the long-term implication of publicing personal information cannot be overlooked as it prones to receive ads and telesales. For example some evidence of social media selling personal information leading to prone to receive advertisement. Although critics many argue that providing personal information help users access to the account more convenient, this line of reasoning is somewhat flawed as it fails to account for the risks of losing personal information and effects on both physical and mental health.
In conclusion, although putting their personal information online offers certain undeniable drawbacks, I reiterate my stance that its advantages are for more substantial. Overall, putting their personal information online is more beneficial in the long run and should be embraced with appropriate management.
