I strongly agree that the advantages of English as a global language will continue to outweigh its disadvantages. Not only does English grant access to an immense volume of information online, but it also unlocks superior job opportunities and facilitates international connections, making travel far more enjoyable. These benefits, in my view, far surpass any potential drawbacks.
Firstly, were it not for English, the vast majority of online information would remain inaccessible to billions of people. Most global news, academic journals, and digital educational content are produced primarily in English. Consequently, anyone with a reasonable command of the language can educate themselves on virtually any subject, from artificial intelligence to ancient history, without waiting for translations. A student in a non-English-speaking country, for example, can directly access lectures from top universities such as Harvard or MIT. Such opportunities would be unthinkable without English serving as a global bridge.
Secondly, having English proficiency dramatically expands one’s career prospects. In an increasingly globalised economy, multinational corporations routinely require English for internal communication, client meetings, and cross-border collaboration. Even within local markets, industries such as information technology, finance, tourism, and logistics favour candidates who speak English, often offering significantly higher salaries as a result. Without English, highly capable individuals risk being confined to local opportunities, regardless of their talent or ambition.
Furthermore, English acts as a powerful tool for connecting people across cultures and enhancing travel experiences. When travelling abroad, English has become the default lingua franca, enabling travellers and locals to communicate despite having different native languages. This makes it possible to form friendships, navigate unfamiliar cities, resolve problems, and gain deeper cultural insights. Had English not achieved this global status, international travel would be considerably more stressful and isolating.
In conclusion, while concerns over linguistic dominance are understandable, I remain convinced that the practical advantages of English – unrivalled access to information, expanded job markets, and seamless global communication – will continue to outweigh its disadvantages for the foreseeable future.
