It is often argued that providing free public transportation 24 hours a day, seven days a week is the most effective solution to traffic congestion in cities. This essay will discuss why the disadvantages outweigh the advantages and why I believe that this idea is difficult to implement.
The idea of making public transport free and available at all times has several advantages. One of the main benefits is that it would be very convenient for people and could save a significant amount of time. Since public transport would operate throughout the day and night without any charge, citizens could travel whenever they need. As a result, people would enjoy greater comfort and spend less money on transportation.
On the other hand, this proposal could create several problems for the government. Firstly, public transport requires regular maintenance. If buses and trains operate all day and night, they may break down more frequently and require more repairs. Secondly, such a system would be extremely expensive. The government would need to pay drivers’ salaries and cover fuel, electricity, and maintenance costs, which would require a large amount of money. Finally, operating transport services 24 hours a day may also raise safety concerns, especially during late-night hours when there are fewer passengers. For these reasons, I believe that this idea would be very difficult to implement in practice.
In conclusion, although free public transportation operating 24 hours a day could provide convenience and financial benefits for citizens, its disadvantages are more significant. Therefore, I believe that this solution is not an effective way to address traffic congestion in cities.
