The issue of the road safety has been considered as essential, provoking a lot of ideas of how to increase it. For example, some people suggest yearly retaking of the test for drivers. Unfortunately, I totally disagree with this idea as there are other more effective ways to achieve it.
Firstly, I would like to say that retaking a test on a regular basis is absolutely irrational as it will only increase the workload of licence issuing services. Another thing is that in some countries people pay bribes to get driving licence. Thus, the bribery rate will only increase. Moreover, drivers who use their car regularly never lose their skills and taking a test every year will be time-consuming and will not increase the driver’s awareness and law obedience.
Secondly, the introduction of traffic cameras has significantly decreased the number of perpetrators, who exceed speed limits, while this is considered to be one of the main causes of car accidents. If such cameras are installed on all roads, the efficiency will increase.
Finally, the fine system should be stricter. In Russia, for instance, if people receive fines, they can pay them on a reduced by half price. So, a lot of people do not bother themselves with following the law on the roads, just because they feel that the punishment is almost invisible. If there is a law about banning the drivers from using their cars unless they pay the fine fully, people will definitely think twice before committing a crime on a road.
In conclusion, I would like to stress that introducing the obligation to pass exams every year won’t make a change as there are more efficient ways to prevent breaking the law on the roads such as traffic cameras vast installation and bringing more severe ways of punishment for careless driving.
