With our newest technological advancements, the average cost of flight tickets experienced a drastic downward trend. Since modern aircraft models are more efficient in using jet fuel, airlines companies can now sustain a wider roster of planes in their inventory with their given budget. This directly influences the price of flight, making them more and more affordable over the years. Some say that people from all economic classes should have the luxury of experiencing overseas accommodation, thus believing that the decrease in ticket prices is a positive result. At surface this might seem like a sensible thing to support, but if we look closer, things might not be as harmless as they seem. In this essay I will talk about the possible benefits of the declining flight ticket prices and how, in the grand scheme of things, it is better for flights to be an exclusive and more restricted way of transportation.
I strongly advocate for people’s freedom of being able to choose the destination they want to travel to, and if that destination requires travel overseas, using planes should be understandable. Taking away this freedom from us with unreasonable ticket prices would result in a major discourse between companies and media. So for the sake of keeping our society at peace and not banning people’s basic rights, I understand why airlines companies are not going out of their ways to change their already optimized ticket prices.
However, raising the price of tickets back might be the better thing to do, at least for our future. Unfortunately, commercial flights are singlehandedly the biggest contributor to carbon emission. And as mentioned before, a downfall in ticket princess results in a higher demand for flights, an increase in demand for flights result in an increase in overall flights across the world, and more commercial airplanes in the sky means more harmful carbon dioxide gas is being exhausted every day. This indirect link might not be as detrimental to our health at first but the result of this has started to be seen. In Turkey, the average carbon emission rates between 2000 and 2026 shows an ominous correlation. The average carbon emission increased 500% in those 26 years, times more, and between 2000 and 2006, approximately the average price ticket decreased 80%, 5 times less. This showcases a linear correlation between flight ticket prices and green gasses in our atmosphere. With this information the discounted price tickets might not seem as friendly as before.
In conclusion I of course think that everyone should have the right to travel wherever they want however they want. But in order to protect our globe and the next generations, due to aircraft’s mass carbon waste disposal, it is best to keep airlines limited.
