Band 8+: The crime rates are increasing in many countries. what are the reason for this, and what solutions can goverenments offer.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In many nations, there has been a rise in crime rates. Two primary contributors to this trend are fewer workplaces and increased costs of education. However, with targeted government initiatives, these problems can be alleviated.

One primary reason for rising crime rates is the scarcity of employment opportunities. Due to insufficient economic processes, some developing countries have fewer jobs in the job market, leaving many people unemployed. Consequently, such individuals frequently resort to criminal activity to meet basic necessities such as food. This is clearly illustrated by Mexico and Brazil, where an increase in overall unemployment rates often correlates with a surge in crime rates.

Another significant factor is the rising cost of education. Due to inflation, universities now demand higher tuition fees than in previous years, making it difficult for many adolescents from low- and middle-class households to acquire quality education. Simultaneously, employers increasingly require job applicants to have tertiary education. As a result, with growing living costs, many people in impoverished areas often acquire basic goods through theft and robbery, a problem which is particularly prevalent in the USA and the UK.

To mitigate these issues, governments should implement a two-pronged approach. Making tertiary education tuition-free can allow universal access to quality education regardless of socioeconomic background. Germany and Finland have experienced record high enrollment in college after full state subsidy for universities, which in turn increased employment rates. Second, targeted investment in industry can increase employment in nations. Japan and South Korea, which have strong manufacturing hubs, tend to have relatively lower crime rates because most people have stable workplaces and steady incomes to meet living expenses.

In conclusion, the limited job availability and the costs of education have a far-reaching effect on crime rates. With sustained government intervention, these issues can be effectively addressed.
