Nowadays English becomes predominant globally due to progress in tourism industry. It is commonly thought that such changes will result in the sole language spoken worldwide. This option brings major benefits such as simplified communication and education, and saving time for mastering other subjects. Although, it might still introduce some insignificant drawbacks.
To start with, the positive aspect of having one language lies in easier interaction between individuals from different backgrounds. If we were to use a single language, people of different nationalities could be understood without any difficulties. A language barrier could be reduced and unity among people worldwide could be fostered. Furthermore, speaking a dominant language facilitates the education process. Taking into account that the vast majority of primary information sources are published in English, being fluent in this language opens the door to finding out all updates first-hand. Moreover, students could focus on excelling in other subjects rather than learning second tongues. Consequently, if we were to speak a sole language, scientific research and discoveries could be boosted.
On the contrary, one of the disadvantageous consequences of having a dominant language is cultural devolution. Language is closely related to cultural heritage, therefore neglecting different languages, in the long run, will result in challenges in comprehension of literature or folklore. Additionally, native speakers of superior language may have a competitive advantage in various aspects of life over those whose mother tongue differs. This could worsen linguistic discrimination on a global scale. Lastly, not all humans are good at learning foreign languages. Consequently, a sole language might negatively impact their mental health.
In conclusion, besides the notable boons, a single language may threaten various cultures, sharpen discrimination and worsen one’s mental health.
