Advantage And Disadvantage

Band 6+: The development of tourism contributed to English becoming the most prominent lan guage in the world. Some people think this will lead to English becoming the only language to be spoken globally What are the advantages and disad vantages to having one language in the world?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

The thought of English being the only spoken language universally can be very beneficial, as it facilitates communication, but there are certain drawbacks like cultural loss.

On the one hand, unifying the world in one spoken language will make communication much easier. People won’t need to use translations in order to comprehend what each other say, which facilitates the linguistic borders people face in new places, this means people from various continents, countries and cultural backgrounds can easily communicate. Furthermore, it will make education much easier, students won’t to have to focus on two to three different languages that reduces their ability to comprehend academic materials. For example, tourists usually avoid countries where the majority of people can speak English, like some African countries, because it is hard to communicate in there.

However, confineding the world in one language will the result in massive cultural loss. Language is considered the base of cultural heritage, abandoning it is more likely to result in people abandoning their traditions as well, as language is inevitably the junction of culture and how it is represented. Consequently, people will end up with identity crises, and in some places they can even lose their morals and values. In some Arabian countries, kids who go to international schools taught entirely in English, tend to behave more like Western people and mimic their behaviours that completely differ from their socitey.

In conclusion, although unifing the world with one spoken language has many benefits, like communicating easier, I believe that the drawbacks represented in cultural loss outweigh these benefits.
