As tourism is increasingly popular nowadays, English is spreading widely and becoming the most spoken language over the world. Although there are a number of merits in having one single language used globally, there are also some demerits worth considering.
Having one single prominent language is most likely to be beneficial in communication and administrative matters worldwide. Firstly, using only one spoken language globally enables communication happens more effectively. As everyone understands one specific language, interactions among foreigners may become effortless. Additionally, issuing administrative documents over countries may be less time-consuming. In bureaucracy, for example, legal document translations would no longer be required and therefore, people would not need to wait for a long time to issue their documents or administrative matters.
On the other hand, limiting prominent language to only English in global communication may harm cultural diversities of nations as an entity in two primary aspects. Firstly, local languages would hardly be preserved as their usage is merely limited to domestic communication. For example, Indonesian, or any other languages than English, may only be taught for daily conversation and textual comprehension without considering wider communication skills such as bargaining or negotiating. As a result, the language would not be developed in terms of its features and therefore may no longer be taught in future classes.
