The growth of tourism in the world led to English becoming the primarily spoken language on Earth. Some people argue, that this phenomenon will result in English turning into the only language to be used globally. There are numerous drawbacks and benefits of having a single language on the whole planet, and they will be discussed in this essay.
On the positive side, if we spoke only one language, there would be no language-barrier between individuals. This means, that almost every process, business interaction or travel would become significantly smoother, and our world would evolve into a much simpler place. In addition, humans could focus on expanding their knowledge on other subjects rather than having to learn new languages. Hence, our society could develop in a higher pace, thanks to the extra time on our hands. For example, if children in school would study more advanced sciences, instead of foreign languages, we would have more groundbreaking inventions.
On the other hand, losing a part of the countries’ cultures would be a major drawback. In other words, in many places language plays a crucial part in feeling their own cultural identity. Moreover, every language has it’s own beauty that is a result of hundreds of years of evolution, and it would be a shame if man-kind gave this up. And then what would make us special? For instance, there are numerous things, that can be expressed in a language more sophisticatedly, than in an other. Losing this part of our heritage would mean that everyone becomes the same in a way.
In conclusion, there are many advantages and disadvantages to having one language in the world. Although it makes our lives substantially easier and more effective, having our own mother-tongue makes each culture special in a way.
