The government should invest more financial resources into the development of public transportation and also decrease the level of private car usage in major cities for better air quality. I personally agree with the statement as such approach would be beneficial for the environment and air quality, in particular and would solve the traffic jam issue in big cities, even though owning a private car is way more comfortable for the majority of the residents of major cities.
Private car ownership is generally considered more convenient in populous cities with underdeveloped public transport system. In the vast majority of megacities with a high population density public transport is overcrowded too much during peak hours, and also accompanied by possible delays and cancellations of routes. Thereby owning a private car makes rides during these hours more comfortable and, additionally, predictable and less dependent on the arrival of the next bus or a subway.
The development of public transportation, however, would have more advantages in long-term. The establishment of suitable infrastructure for public transit in major cities would gradually decrease the growing demand for private car ownership by offering similar ride conditions with lower costs. As a result of the approach the number of private vehicles would decline over time and, thus, lead to lower levels of traffic congestions.
Another benefit of increased financial stimulation of public transport sector is an improvement of environment with air quality. The establishment of legislation for further improvement of convenience and affordability of public transport in major cities would encourage their citizens to make more use of buses and underground metro on a daily basis. In addition, public transport is more eco-frinedly than private cars, so declined demand for private vehicles along with an increased number of environmentally friendly buses and subways would significantly improve air quality in megacities inthe long run
To summarize, although private car ownership is more convenient and practical for the majority of major city residents, the development of public transport infrastructure would significantly improve the air quality and solve the problem of traffic congestions.
