It is often argued that government should channel its resources in plunking services rather than budgeting for arts, music and theatre. Whilst I agree with this opinion, I think funding of the arts and music sector is also vital.
On the one hand, the government must definitely allocate a large part of its budget on public services. This determines the overall quality of life and develops the country at large, ensuring that infrastructure such as schools, hospitals and roads are available for all citizens. This satisfies the primary needs of the society. For example, a country can survive without music concerts, but the absence of medicine among others will lead to significant problems. That’s why government should prioritize adequate funding of public services.
On the other hand, it is also important for the government to budget for these creative pursuits as they play an integral part of the society’s intellectual development, culture and amusement. The art and music sector serve as therapeutic grounds for many individuals as a relief of stress and anxiety, functioning as a means of emotional expression. People use these creatives to convey their emotions, be it sadness, happiness or anger. For instance, people battling with depression have attested to a positive impact on their recovery journey through artistic pursuits. This is why government should not dismiss the financing of the art and music sector.
To conclude, government should invest in both sectors because they both play a crucial role in improving the quality of life at large.
