Band 8+: The government's investment in arts, music and theatre is a waste of money. Governments should invest these funds in public services instead. To what extent do you agree with this statement ?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

It is often argued that the government should prioritize financing public services over allocating its budget to arts, music, and theatre. While I agree that government investments in public services are crucial, I also believe that proper funding for the arts sector is essential for society.

On one hand, the government should allocate a significant portion of its budget to public services, which enhance the overall quality of life by providing essential services such as schools, hospitals, and roads to all citizens regardless of their income or social status. Public services address the fundamental needs of society and therefore require adequate funding. In comparison, artists and musicians are not involved in curing diseases or constructing infrastructure, making their role secondary. Although a country can function without music concerts, the absence of essential medical services would lead to significant issues. Thus, the government should prioritize adequate funding for public services.

On the other hand, arts, music, and theatre are not mere extravagances but integral components of cultural, intellectual, and recreational development in society. Art and music capture people’s attention, offering diverse perspectives on various phenomena and conveying profound meanings. A single piece of art or music can inspire countless individuals to reconsider their views on certain situations, contributing significantly to the nation’s personal and intellectual growth. Additionally, activities such as visiting museums, watching movies, and listening to music are popular means of relaxation and entertainment. Therefore, the arts sector also holds importance in society and should not be overlooked.

In conclusion, while I acknowledge the necessity of the government prioritizing funding for urgent societal needs like public services, I maintain that arts, music, and theatre should also receive financial support because of their significant role in societal development and entertainment.
